Dubrovnik Modern Art Museum

Dubrovnik Modern Art Museum

Paintings, sculptures and works of art by artists from the Dubrovnik School make up the collection in the city's Modern Art Museum, a space where you can also enjoy spectacular views from its terrace.

Just a 10-minute walk from Pile Gate, you'll find Dubrovnik's Modern Art Museum. or, MOMAD for short. Housed in a former villa commissioned by the prominent Banac family in 1948, the building itself is a work of art, inspired by Dubrovnik’s historic landmarks like the Rector's Palace. Today, it stands as the city’s leading center for modern and contemporary art, where architecture and creativity blend seamlessly.

Among the donations and aquisitions, Dubrovnik's Modern Art Museum boasts a collection of almost 3,000 pieces, largely paintings and sculptures.

The Collection

In total, 2,620 works of art form MOMAD's collection. It's a broad compilation of pieces from the end of the 19th century to several decades after World War II. Most paintings depict Dubrovnik's landscape, both the walled city and surrounding natural areas.

Among the various themes, the super realistic portraits of noble families and individuals that were important in Dubrovnik's recent history stand out. Vlaho Bukovac and Celestin Medović are the artists with the most pieces of work on display. There are also several pieces from international artists.

In recent years, the museum has added a large number of audiovisual materials and sculptures (located on the terrace) to its collection.

Visit the Terrace

One of the most surprising aspects of the Modern Art Museum is the terrace. From the second floor of this palace, you'll get incredible views of Dubrovnik's Old Port, the walled city and Banje beach.

You'll also find some bronze statues on the terrace, and you can look out over the inner courtyard of the museum.
