General Information
Dubrovnik in numbers
While Dubrovnik may cover just over 142.6 km² (55.1 sq mi) and have less than 53,000 inhabitants, the “Pearl of the Adriatic” is one of the most visited cities in Croatia. As a part of the Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik is just a few kilometres away from the border of Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
A city of cats and pigeons
On arrival in Dubrovnik, you'll quickly notice the number of pigeons soaring around the walled city. These winged companions, completely unfazed by tourists, have become an icon of the city.
Walking through Dubrovnik or Kotor, the number of cats hanging around is also sure to catch your eye. These feline inhabitants are lovingly taken care of by local residents and hold a special place in their hearts. This is in part due to the fact that in the 14th century, cats historically protected the city of Dubrovnik from the Black Plague by hunting disease-carrying rats.
Time zone
The official time zone of Croatia is GMT+1, the same as Spain, France, and Germany, and 1 hour ahead of the UK, Ireland and Portugal.
Currency
The official currency in Dubrovnik is the euro, as of January 2023. Previously, it was the Croatian kuna (HRK), which was divided into 100 lipas. Initially, you could still find various shops showing prices in both currencies to help adjust to the change. As of December 2023 however, prices in euros will only appear throughout the city.
Electrical currents
Croatia operates on a 230V supply voltage, like the EU, so anyone visiting from continental Europe won't need an adapter. If travelling from Australia, Canada, Ireland, the US, or the UK, you'll need to bring an adapter with you.
Healthcare
If travelling to Dubrovnik as a European citizen, simply present your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and you'll be tended to free of charge.
