Dubrovnik Natural History Museum

Dubrovnik Natural History Museum

Discover what makes up the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum's collection, from taxidermied animals to live insects, and notes from its biggest contributor—Antun Drobac.

Within the walled city is the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, founded in 1872 with the intention of educating audiences about the region's flora and fauna. Much of the current exhibition is based on the personal collection of Antun Drobac, one of the museum’s founding members. His passion for nature is reflected in the fascinating displays of shells, taxidermy animals, and preserved fauna that laid the foundation for this educational space.

Throughout the museum, you'll see taxidermy animals, especially birds and fish. The most interesting species in the Dubrovnik Museum of Natural History are an otter, a giant Adriatic Sea turtle, a thresher shark and the stuffed head of a tuna.

What's more, insect enthusiasts will enjoy the rooms displaying an array of insects, like butterflies and beetles. The Natural History Museum also houses a room that simulates marine life off the Dubrovnik coast.

Worth a Visit...

The Dubrovnik Natural History Museum can be interesting for those who have a great interest in zoology, but the collection itself can prove rather scarce overall. The taxidermy animals that are on display are birds, fish and insects that can be found in other ecosystems. It's worth a visit, but only after visiting other museums in Dubrovnik first.
