Dubrovnik Cable Car
One of Dubrovnik’s most popular attractions is the cable car, taking you 400 metres (1,312 feet) above sea level for unbeatable views of the walled city and the shimmering Adriatic Sea. The photo opportunities are endless!
History
The Dubrovnik cable car opened in 1969, a decade before the city was declared a World Heritage Site. In addition to being one of the most popular tourist attractions, it was the easiest way of getting to the centre of Dubrovnik from the top of Srđ Hill.
During the darkest chapter of Dubrovnik's history, the War of Yugoslavia, the old walled city was besieged and bombed causing havoc, including the complete destruction of the cable car.
Although the conflict in Croatia ended in 1995, it wasn't until 2010 when the cable car was opened once more to the public, completely renovated. Nowadays, about 2,5 million tourists take a ride each year.
The Best Views of Dubrovnik
From Dubrovnik's cable car, you'll have unrivalled views of the walls, the Old Port and the outskirts of the city. On extra clear days you can even make out the island of Lokrum and the beach near the harbour.
Once at the top of Srđ Hill, you'll be able to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view from the terrace of the cable car station.
Our Advice
The views of the walled city from the cable car are incredible at any time of the day. However, if you're not under any time constraints, we recommend taking a trip on the cable car at sunset. Experiencing golden hour, watching the sun set over Dubrovnik, turning the harbour and the city walls different shades of orange. Don't miss out!
Remember that the cable car's last departure is 30 minutes before closing time.
