Dominican Monastery

Discover the history of Dubrovnik's Dominican Monastery, which took two centuries to build, combining Roman, Gothic and Baroque elements.

Between Sponza Palace and Ploče Gate, is one of the oldest monuments in Dubrovnik: the Dominican Monastery. The Dominican monks settled in the city at the beginning of the 13th century and began building a monastery inside the city walls to carry out their work.

The Dominican Monastery and Church weren't finished until the 14th century, culminating in a religious complex that combines Roman, Gothic and Baroque styles. Following the terrible 1667 earthquakes, a large part of the facade had to be rebuilt.

The most beautiful part of the Dominican Monastery is the interior patio surrounded by arches, with orange trees and palm trees, and a central stone well. During the siege of Dubrovnik in the War of Independence, this well was the only source of drinking water for inhabitants inside the walled city.

Dubrovnik's Dominican Monastery houses numerous tombs of the city's noble families.
